In the Trenches at Microsoft: Real-world Distributed Systems

Reuben Bond

Reuben discussed his experiences at Microsoft, culminating in building a distributed, real-time metrics and monitoring system that is now used across many teams.
He went through the journey of what worked and what failed miserably, despite their best efforts. Reuben spoke about how they used MongoDB and how, after some time, they discovered it was not a good fit for what they were trying to achieve. The internal system they were developing was a MDM (Multi-Dimensional Metrics) system to enable fast access to near-real-time data that would allow engineers and product managers to explore the performance (business or technical) in production. It was written in C# and built directly on top of Service Fabric.

Completing and Analysing a URL Migration

Sam Partland

Sam spoke about how a migration of a small site is pretty simple, but as soon as you move into migrating larger sites there are lot more things to consider. Things such as the more advanced redirect requirements, or poor implementation that slipped the checks, and what we can do to ensure it’s still a successful migration.

Sam presented his tips on how to correctly perform a website migration including how to map out your migration, issues you may face and the post-migration analysis. Working through the analysis of data you should already have, like pre-migration rankings and website scrapes, but also how to analyse a migration where you didn’t have the correct data to begin with.
